Estevan, Saskatchewan

It is said that never before was Estevan so flooded with workers during threshing time, as it is now, and most of them are from the States. Because of the impudence and pranks played by these workers, the town police was growing tired of them, and one felt obligated to turn them over to the city. Many of them sit in saloons (taverns), and drink themselves into a stupor resulting in many fights and bloody heads, which forces the police to throw dozens of these drunkards into prison. After these people have spent their last cent foolishly on drink, they think nothing of begging on the streets, and then squandering the alms they received in the drinking establishments. It almost seems necessary to request troops to rid the city of this undesirable element. When the peace disturbers and drunkards run into the police, they have to pay a fine right away, or be taken to Regina, our capital city, to do jail time as punishment.

As I came from the post office and went through town, I spotted on the north side of one such saloon about 60 or 70 such men, who made a lot of noise. As curiosity got the better of me and I went closer, what did I notice? They were railing against the country and government, and cursing the rich and millionaires, and so on. Many even preached out and out revolution. Soon one can say: "The world has become the breeding ground of revolution and other such vices and looks to have a bleak future ahead." And where does that all come from? -- A country without a God, a country without religion and belief, a country with schools that have no religion, the banning of religious school books from schools. The consequence is alienation from God, take away customs and morals from our boys and girls, even generations. A country without God will not last. "Every nation that is of different opinions, will disappear," says Holy Scripture. One would think that man is of the belief that he will live forever, and is totally self sufficient. For them, earth is only the place of their freedom, their worldly pleasures and, and when they have to say good-bye to these pleasures and freedoms, death will appear and, with his bony hand, will make a terrible mark on their foreheads, and then, yes, then perhaps they will think of a reconciliation with the offended creator of the universe. But what if God's patience has run out, what then? God doesn't care for belated repentance, and soon the dull tone of the church bell announces that this or that person is being buried, and the coffin barely makes a sound as it sinks into the ground. Soon a mound of dirt covers the corpse; lonely rests the once self reliant, freedom and pleasure loving person among the four dirt walls. What did this man become because of his worldly freedom, pleasure addition, neglect of duty, forgetful of God, immoral and laziness of character? A corpse, a feast for worms, moldering in the grave and which through eventual decomposition, will disappear entirely.

Yes, if all Christians of the 20th century would be as steadfast as those of the first 300 years, Christianity, the church, school and religion of today would be different. Then modern atheism and crass disbelief could not have spread to the degree that it has, then many a new holiday would dawn in the church. With today's laggardness and indifference do people take the time to profess their faith and intercede for Christianity?

So let's rather fight for Christianity and the church as did our forefathers; let us fight against modern atheism and disbelief. Everything can be attained through work and sacrifice. Let's look after Christian schools and good teachers, so that our future will have well instructed children and good citizens, who will tirelessly work with us for the propagation of Christianity and religious teaching institutions, as we have always done. Be proud of your faith, as it was handed down from your forebears, be proud of your language and heritage, and try to instill your faith in your family members, because we are guides and leader in our families.

After we have withstood trials and great difficulties, we, too, will become worthy to enter the harbor of eternal peace.

Noch niemals vorher während der Dreschzeit soll Estevan so mit Arbeitsleuten überfluthet worden sein wie heute, und die meisten der Arbeiter kommen aus den Ver. Staaten. Weil diese Leute viele freche schlimme Streiche verüben, ist die Ortspolizei ihrer schon recht überdrüssig geworden und man fühlt sich gezwungen, sie der Stadt zu verweisen. Viele derselben sitzen in den Saloons (Schankwirtschaften), wo sie sich bis zur Sinnlosigkeit betrinken und dabei geht es nur selten ohne Streit und blutige Köpfe ab, sodaß die Polizei diese Trunkenbolde schon dutzendweise ins Gefängniß sperrt. Haben dann diese Menschen den letzten Cent leichtsinnig vertrunken, entblöden sie sich nicht, auf den Straßen zu bettleln und das erhaltene Almosen sofort wieder in den Trinkhäusern zu vergeuden. Faßt wäre es nöthig, Truppen zu verlangen, um die Stadt von diesen unliebsamen Elemente zu säubern. Kommen die Ruhestörer und Trunkenbolde mit der Polizei in Berührung, müssen sie die ihnen aufgelegte Strafe sofort zahlen, widrigenfalls sie nach Regina, der Hauptstadt, transportiert werden, um dort die Strafe abzusitzen.

Als ich heute Morgen von der Post durch die Stadt ging, sah ich an der Nordseite eines Saloons etwa 60 bis 70 Mann stehen, welche viel Lärm machten. Als ich, von Neugier getrieben, näher trat, was vernahm ich da? Flüche über Staat und Regierung, Verwünschungen auf Reiche und Millionaire, und so weiter. Viele predigten sogar offene Revolution. Bald kann man sagen: "Die Welt ist zur Brutstätte der Revolution und jeglicher Laster geworden und sieht einer schlimmen Zukunft entgegen." Und woher kommt das alles? - Ein Staat ohne Gott, ein Staat ohne Religion und Glaube, ein Staat mit religonslosen Schulen die Verbannung religiöser Lehrbücher aus den Schulen. Die Folge ist Gottentfremdung, Entsittlichung und Demoralisation der heranwachsenen Geschlechter und Generationen. Ein Reich ohne Gott wird nicht auf die Dauer bestehen. "Jedes Reich das mit sich selbst uneins ist, wird verwüstet werden," sagt die hl. Schrift.

Man sollte meinen, die Menschen leben in dem Glauben ewig auf Erden wandeln zu können und nur von sich selbst abhängig zu sein. Die Erde ist für sie lediglich die Stätte der Freiheit, des weltlichen Genusses und, müssen sie endlich diesen Genüssen, dieser Freiheit Ade sagen, tritt der Tod mit knöcherner Hand an sie heran und drückt ihnen ein furchtbares Zeichen gleichsam auf die Stirne, dann, ja dann denkt man vielleicht noch an eine Aussöhnung mit dem beleidigten Schöpfer des Weltalls. Ist aber die Langmuth Gottes bereitz erschöpft, was dann? Verspätete Reue hat keinen Werth bei Gott und dann verkündet bald in dumpfen Tönen die Thurmglocke, daß dieser oder jener Mensch zu Grabe getragen wird, und kaum hörbar sinkt der Sarg in die Erde. Bald deckt ein Erdhügel die Leiche; einsam ruht der vorher ganz uf sich vertrauende freiheitsliebende Genußmensch, zwischen vier Erdwänden. Was ist der Mensch geworden durch seine Weltfreiheit, Genußsucht, Pflichtvernachlässigung, Gottvergessenheit, Unmoral und Geistesträgigkeit? Eine Leiche,eine Würmerspeise, die im Grabe modert und sich durch allmälige Verwesung gänzlich auflöst.

Ja, wenn alle Christen des 20. Jahrhunderts so stünden wie die der ersten drei Jahrhunderte, ständen die Sachen des Christenthums, der Kirche, Schule und Religion heutigentags ganz anders da. Dann hätte das moderne Heidenthum und der große Unglaube nicht in diesem Maße um sich greifen können, dann würde auch noch der Kirche mancher Freudentag aufleuchten. Wie viel Zeit aber, den Glauben zu bekennen, für Christenthum einzutretten, bleibt heutigentags unbenutzt, nur wegen Saumseligkeit und Gleichgültigkeit? - Kämpfen wir also lieber für das Christenthum und die Kirche wie unsere Vorfahren; kämpfen wir gegen das moderne Heidenthum und den Unglauben. Durch Arbeit und Opfer kann alles erreicht werden. Sorgen wir für christliche Schulen und gute Lehrer, dann erzeugt die Zukunft auch gut gesittierte Kinder und gute Bürger, welche unermütlich mit uns an der Fortpflanzung des Christenthums, der religiösen Lehranstalten arbeiten, wie wir es immer gethan. Seid stolz auf euren Glauben, wie er euch von den Vorfahren übermittelt wurde, seid stolz auf eure Sprache und eure Herkunft, und bestrebt, euren Glauben auf euere Familienangehöhrige übertragen, denn wir sind die Leiter und Führer unserer Familien. Dann werden auch wir, haben wir die großen Gefahren und Prüfungen überstanden, würdig befunden im Hafen des ewigen Friedens einzulaufen.
