I can happily report to the readers of the newspaper that my pupils, namely Nympha Bachmeier, the daughter of Siegfried Bachmeier, and Katharina Mack, the daughter of Joseph Mack, passed an exam, in the presence of the pastor and the people, with flying colors. Miss Bachmeier played and sang the high mass and hymns with some other students on the third Sunday in June, and Miss Mack did the same on the first Sunday in July. With that, the Landau parish no longer needs to get gray hair about having an organist. And so I succeeded after two and a half months to prepare 13- to 15-year-old children for accompanying the Latin Mass with organ-playing and singing. Obviously, I am not speaking about a complete education for organists. Both of the girls also play and sing the Latin Vespers better than well, even though they could read neither German nor Latin when they started instruction. Barbara Frank, the daughter of Joseph Frank, will have to lead the third Mass. This girl began her lessons later than the others and is therefore somewhat behind, but I hope that she will pass her examination. I am sorry that I won't be able to be present, since up to that time I will again have accepted a schoolteacher position in the vicinity of Harvey, North Dakota. With that, the young organist is left to herself, and it might well be that without her instructor progress will be difficult. All three of the girls sing and play a large repertoire of church hymns for every church celebration. Among the Latin hymns are the Veni Creator, Jesu Dulcis Memoria, Rex Christe Primogenite and Adoremus in Aeternum, which they have mastered to great perfection. I must add that the children vocalize these hymns so precisely, and intone them so correctly, as if they were three old Romans. May the three young organists often make the praise of God resound, and may our dear Father in Heaven, whom they honor by singing His praise and glory, strengthen them in their work. As the Holy Bible says, "Out of the mouths of babes you have fashioned praise for Yourself."

I have been unable to get around to sending in my picture and my autobiography, because to date I have been very busy, and writing the life-story of a man in his fifties requires a lot of reflection, but I will furnish them to the dear Der Staats-Anzeiger as soon as possible. And so, I would like to ask my old colleague Romuald Dirk and my good friend, Peter Gabriel, to have patience, and then my picture and autobiography will appear in Der Staats-Anzeiger editor's office suddenly, and perhaps overnight.

Dear colleague Romuald: You often complain that my submissions are rarely to be found in Der Staats-Anzeiger, and yet I am certainly one of the most zealous correspondents of the paper, and Editor Brandt has reports from me in the paper almost every week, and has an additional warehouse full of correspondence on hand. Therefore, I must believe that my dear colleague either forgets my reports very quickly, or simply fails to see them. But if it is true that my submissions seldom appear, it is the editor's fault, not mine. Dear colleague Romuald, I wish you the best of luck in your new administrative position. It is certainly a good appointment -better by far than that of schoolteacher! I send cordial greetings to you and your wife, and also to Mr. Peter Gabriel. My correspondence with the latter has lapsed long ago because I await a reply. I don't know why he doesn't write.

The weather is excellent here, and never in my life have I seen the grain fields looking better. The prospects for a good harvest are truly comforting. If we have favorable weather from now on without rain, there will be a bumper crop, for the fields are almost flooded with thundershowers and persistent rain. Construction of the proposed new church, mandated by the diocesan bishop, should be completed before the end of the summer. There is little work to be had in the city, and wages are meager. The price of farms has dropped remarkably.

In meiner Freude kann ich den Lesern des Blattes berichten, daß meine Schülerinnen, nämlich die Tochter des Siegfried Bachmeier namens Nympha und die Tochter des Joseph Mack, namens Katharina, ein glänzendes Examen vor den Pfarrherren und dem Volk bestanden. Erstere spielte und sang mit noch andrern Schülern am 3. Junisonntag das Hochamt nebst Zwischensängen und letztere leistete das Gleiche am ersten Julisonntag. Somit hat die Gemeinde Landau nicht mehr nöthig sich wegen eines Organisten graue Haare machen zu lassen. Nach Verlauf von 2 ½ Monat also gelang es mir Kinder von 13 bis 15 Jahren so vorzubereiten, daß sie heute mächtig sind den lateinischen Gottesdienst mit Orgelspiel und Gesang zu begleiten. Ich spreche selbstredend nicht von einer vollkommenen Ausbildung zum Organisten. Die beiden Mädchen spielen und singen außerdem die lateinische Vesper besser als gut, obgleich sie beim Eintritt in den Unterricht weder deutsch noch lateinisch lesen konnten. Den 3. Gottesdienst wird die Tochter des Joseph Frank, Barbara mit Namen, leiten müssen. Das Mädchen begann den Unterricht später als die anderen und ist etwas zurück, aber ich hoffe, daß sie ihr Examen machen wird. Thut mir leid, nicht dabei sein zu können, da ich bis dahin in der Umgegend von Harvey N. D. den Schulunterricht wieder aufgenommen haben werde. Somit ist die junge Organistin sich selbst überlassen und es mag sein, daß es ihr ohne den Lehrer schwer vorkommen wird. Alle drei Mädchen singen und spielen eine große Zahl Kirchenlieder für jede kirchliche Feier. Von den lateinischen Kirchenliedern: Veni Creator, Jesu dulcis memoria, Rex Christe primogenite, Adoremus in aeternum, die sie mit großer Fertigkeit meistern, muß ich noch bemerken, daß die Kinder dieselben deutlich aussprechen und richtig betonen, als wären alle drei alte Lateiner. Mögen die drei jungen Organistinnen noch oft das Lob Gottes erschallen lassen und möge der liebe Himmelsvater, dem zu Ehren sie Preis und Glorie singen, sie in ihrer Arbeit stärkken. Aus dem Munde der Unschuldigen hast Du Lob Dir bereitet," sagt die hl. Schrift.

Mit der Einsendung meines Bildes und meiner Lebensbeschreibung, werde ich mich nicht sonderlich beeilen können, denn ich bin bis dato zu sehr beschäftigt, und die Lebensbeschreibung eines Menschen bis ins Halbhundertalter bedarf viel Nachdenkens, aber ich werde sie dem lieben Staats-Anzeiger baldmöglichst zustellen. Also mögen sich mein alter Kollege Romuald Dirk und mein guter Freund Peter Gabriel noch ein wenig gedulden, dann wird plötzlich, über Nacht vielleicht, mein Bild nebst Lebensbeschreibung in der Redaktionsstube Der Staats-Anzeigerr erscheinen.

Lieber Kollege Romuald: Sie klagen oft, daß meine Eingesandts nur spärlich im Der Staats-Anzeiger zu finden seien, und doch bin ich sicher einer der eifrigsten Korrespondenten Der Staats-Anzeiger, und Herr Redakteur Brandt hat doch fast wöchentlich Berichte von mir im Blatte, und dazu noch ein Lager Korrespondenzen an Hand. Ich muß also glauben, daß mein lieber Kollege meine Berichte rasch vergißt oder sie ganz übersieht. Sollten aber meine Eingesandts selten erscheinen, so ist das nicht meine Schuld, sondern die der Redaktion. Lieber Kollege Romuald, ich wünsche recht viel Glück zum neuen Verwaltersposten. Gewiß eine gute Anstellung-weit besser als die Schulmeisterei! Uebermittele herzlichen Gruß Ihnen und Gemahlin und auch Herrn Peter Gabriel. Der Briefwechsel mit letztgenanntem Herrn ist seit längerer Zeit in's Stocken gerathen, denn ich warte auf Antwort. Der Grund seines Schweigens ist mir unbekannt.

Wir haben hier treffliche Witterung und ich habe in meinem Leben nie besseren Stand der Fruchtfelder gesehen als hier. Somit sind auch die Ernteaussichten recht trostvolle. Sollten wir günstigen Witterung selbst von nun an regenlose erhalten, so wird hier doch eine reiche Ernte eingeheimst werden, denn die Felder sind von vielen Gewitter- und Landregen fast getränkt.-Die neuzuerbauende Kirche soll auf befehl des Hochwürdigsten Diozesanenbischofs noch diesen Sommer fertig geteilt werden. In der Stadt ist wenig Arbeit zu haben und das Verdienst mager. Die Hofstellen sinken merklich im Preise.
