My wife and I made a visit to Sedley, Saskatchewan, Canada on December 29. There we were received with open arms by our dear friends Stephan Helfrich and his wife. We found Mr. Helfrich and his family in the best of health, and there was almost no end to the well-wishing for the new year. The children, too, were very fond of me and didn't want to leave me at all. A truly religious civility prevailed in our dear friends' home, which the children also reflected by their bearing. As the well known Bishop Ketteler of Mainz in Germany rightly observes, among all of God's gifts, Christian education is the greatest. To see and hear the children in this family pray is simply moving. - "You have prepared praise for yourself, O Lord, through the mouth of the innocent ones!" - Where there is true fear of the Lord in a home, there is also peace of soul, and the Lord blesses it now and forever.

Mr. Stefan Helfrich is a respected and beloved man in Sedley and vicinity because of his German honor and honesty in his business and occupation, which extends considerably. Sedley is indebted to him for much, and customers stream to him from far away. He conducts a flourishing flour business which is totally in his hands, and a pawnshop, and his two oldest sons are kept very busy delivering wares in the city. Mr. Helfrich has amassed a nice amount of money, no small thanks to his wife Barbara, who is a busy housekeeper, and who also is still the old lover of good music and singing that I learned to know twelve years ago. Even today, she still has a splendid soprano voice and sings the highest notes without any strain. We are deeply grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Helfrich for their friendly welcome and for playing the host to us.

Five years ago, I was also visiting in Sedley, and stayed with this family for 13 days. The church that was built at that time had only bare walls and the building was done, so to speak, without a plan and without a tower. But today this church presents a much different appearance, thanks to the untiring work of the priest residing there, Rev. John Johnson. A tower, approximately 65 feet high, affords the house of God an entirely different appearance, and there is also no lack of decoration inside. The high altar, several statues of saints and the crucifix on the left side of the church constitute its main beauty. I must say that Sedley has erected a worthy house of God for the Lord and, while five years ago quarreling and hatred among the parishioners tore them asunder, they have now achieved unity, by the grace of God, and the efficiency of the shepherd of souls, the Rev. John Johnson, who has lived in Sedley for two years, was able to remove all of the evil. Also, the Blumenfeld parish, which is a mission of the parish in Sedley, and in which peace was badly shaken only a few years ago, there is now utmost harmony. May peace and God's blessing keep on resting on the parish!

The hamlet of Sedley is situated in the heart of the most fertile farm fields in Saskatchewan. It is very lively because the entire surrounding area is settled by well-to-do farmers, who do all of their shopping in Sedley. Sedley also has an absolutely modern hotel, whose proprietor is a German-American. There is a daily [railroad] connection with Regina and Winnipeg, and also with Weyburn and Staughton. The area is very well suited for wheat-farming, and there is no unusable land. To the south the land is all level, very rich and without any stones. Small wonder that the farmers are rich as a consequence, and know nothing about crop failures.

We spent the New Years season most pleasurably with Mr. Helfrich. The attraction was not beer and whiskey, which indeed could be had, but rather it was music, organ playing and singing that was the source of our pleasure.

I thank my old landlord, Mr. John M. Jochim in Fallon, North Dakota, for his letter, and send hearty greetings to him and his wife and family, and also to Mr. Mathias Barth. I would like very much to hear from Mr. Jochim soon, as to whether the children, who took instruction from me, are still busy making music.

The weather here is as if it were May. It seems that Spring has come to the far North before Winter has even set in.

Am 29. Dezember machten ich und Frau eine Besuchsreise nach Sedley Sask., Canada, wo wir von unserem theueren Freunde Stephan Helfrich und dessen Gattin mit offenen Armen aufgenommen wurden. Wir trafen Herrn Helfrich und Familie bei bester Gesundheit an und die Glueckwuensche aufs neue Jahr wollten schier kein Ende nehmen. Auch seine Kinder sind mir sehr zugethan und wollten gar nicht von mir lassen. Im Hause unseres lieben Freundes herrscht wahre religioese Gesittung, was die Kinder auch durch ihr betragen dokumentirten. Unter allen Gottesgaben, sagt mit Recht der bekannte Bischof Ketteler von Mainz in Deutschland, ist christliche Erziehung die groesste. Es ist einfach ruehrend, die Kinder in dieser Familie beten zu sehen und zu hoeren.-"Durch den Mund der Unschuldigen hast Du, o Herr, Dir Lob bereitet!"-Wo wahre Gottesfurcht im Hause eingekehrt ist, hat auch der Seelenfriede sein schoenes Plaetzchen, und der Herr segnet zeitlich und ewiglich.

Herr Stefan Helfrich ist in Sedley und weiter Umgegend ein recht angesehener und beliebter Mann wegen seiner deutschen Ehrbarkeit und Redlichkeit im Handel und Geschaeft, welches grosse Ausdehnung hat. Viel hat Sedley ihm zu danken und von weiter Ferne stroemen die Kunden ihm zu. Er betreibt einen schwunghaften Mehlhandel, der ganz in seinen Haenden ruht, einen Leihstall, und seine zwei aeltesten Soehne sind mit Abliefern der Waaren in der Stadt vollauf beschaeftigt. Herr Helfrich hat sich ein nettes Kapital erworben, was er nicht zum Mindesten auch seiner treuen Gattin Barbara zu danken hat, die eine tuechtige Haushaelterin und aber auch noch immer die alte Liebhaberin guter Musik und guten Gesanges ist, als welche ich sie vor schon 12 Jahren kennen lernte. Sie hat heute noch eine praechtige, helle Stimme und singt ohne Anstrengung die hoechsten Toene. Wir danken Herrn und Frau Helfrich herzlichst fuer die freundliche Aufnahme und Bewirthung.

Vor fuenf Jahren war ich auch auf Besuch in Sedley und weilte 13 Tage in dieser Familie. Die damals gebaute katholische Kirche zeigte nur nackte Waende und der Bau war sozusagen ohne Plan, ohne Thurm, aufgefuehrt. Heute aber steht diese Kirche, dank der unermuedlichen Arbeit des dort residirenden Pfarrers, Hochw. Joh. Johnson, ganz anders da. Ein etwa 65 Fuss hoher Thurm verleiht dem Gotteshause ein ganz anderes Aussehen und auch an innerlicher Ausschmueckung fehlt es nicht mehr. Der Hochaltar nebst mehreren Statuen von Heiligen und das Kruzifix an der linken Seite der Kirche bilden die Hauptschoenheiten derselben. Ich muss sagen, Sedley hat dem Herrn ein wuerdiges Gotteshaus errichtet und, waehrend vor fuenf Jahren Streit und Hass unter den Eingepfarrten weite Abgruende rissen, ist jetzt Einigkeit durch Gottes Fuegung eingekehrt, und die Wirksamkeit des heute zwei Jahre in Sedley residirenden Seelenhirten, des Hochw. Joh. Johnson, war im Stande, alle Uebel zu beseitigen. Auch die Gemeinde Blumenfeld, welche als Mission der Pfarrei Sedley zugetheilt ist, und in welcher noch vor wenigen Jahren der Friede sehr erschuettert war, erfreut sich bester Eintracht. Moege der Friede und Segen Gottes auch weiter auf den Gemeinden ruhen!

Das Staedtchen Sedley liegt im Herzen der fruchtbarsten Ackerbauflaechen, welche Saskatchewan kennt, ist sehr lebhaft, denn die ganze Umgegend ist von wohlhabenden Farmern besiedelt, die alle ihre Einkaeufe in Sedley besorgen. Sedley hat auch ein durchaus modernes Hotel, dessen Eigenthuemer ein Deutsch-Amerikaner ist. Es hat taegliche Verbindung mit Regina und Winnipeg, und noch weitere mit Weyburn und Staughton. Die Gegend eignet sich sehr fuer Weizenbau und es ist dort kein unbrauchbares Land. Von der Suedseite her bildet das Land eine voellige ebene, ist sehr fett und weist keine Steine auf. Kein Wunder, dass die Herren Farmer erfolgreich sind und von Fehlernten nichts wissen.

Die Neujahrszeit brachten wir recht vergnuegt bei Herrn Helfrich zu. Nicht waren Gerstensaft und Feuerwasser, die bei ihm wohl zu finden waren, die Anziehungskraft, sondern Musik, Orgelspiel und Gesang bildeten die Quelle des Genusses. -

Ich danke meinem alten Hauswirth Herrn Johannes M. Jochim in Fallon, N. D. fuer mir gesandte Briefe und gruesse herzlich ihn nebst Frau und Kindern, wie auch Herrn Mathias Barth. Es sollte mich freuen, bald von Herrn Jochim zu hoeren, ob die Kinder, welche bei mir Unterricht nahmen, noch immer fleissig Musik treiben.

Das Wetter ist hier wie im Mai. Im hohen Norden ist, wie es scheint, der Fruehling gekommen, ehe der Winter seinen Einzug hielt.
